BREADFRUIT, SUKUN

The breadfruit is a native of Polynesia where it is an important staple food. It was the center of some romantic history (Mutiny on the Bounty, 1787) in the 18th century. Introduced into most tropical countries, it has not attained much importance except in the West India. Like Nangka and Cempedak, the breadfruit is formed from whole inflorescence. It is more or less round. Two forms of fruit’s seedless and seeded- are to be found. They are used more as a vegetable than as a fruit. The seedless varieties may be sliced, boiled or baked whole, or ground up and make into biscuits, and after cooking have a chestnut flavor.
