smithii (Tamarind - NE Queensland) (Giving the Sunrise Photos a short break)

This is a Large fruited Tamarind. Seeds are enclosed by a juicy red or orange aril ideal for juice or jams. The tree bears well and is very easy to grow. When I ate some of the fruit, the immediate reaction was it had a similar taste as sour not properly ripe plums. Openly branched, fairly dense rounded canopy.Insignificant flowers.

The seeds are held in these 3 part capsules that usually split on the tree to allow the fruit to fall but this one is whole having been blown down in a storm. This fruit is ripe. As it was the yellow casing was only just holding together.

* * * I am just about to go to Davies Creek today to see if any fungi are out and what new wildflowers might appear. This is a waterfall and lovely water areas too as well as massive granite boulder country. I already have some Davies Creek photos 0n Flickr in a SET with that name.
